Truly, Natccu (pronounced “na-chew”) is a mystery. Born Natsuko Sato in Tokyo, she’s a singer-songwriter, but she doesn’t sound like one. In fact, it’s hard to put your finger on what it is she does sound like; her curious blend of gritty rock, melodic pop and enka is utterly unique.
It could be her voice: at times hysterical, filled with dramatic gulps of passion; and then quiet, seductive or sweet; but always with a measure of control that is dizzying. Or then again, it could be the bed of tight rhythm, crunchy guitars and crashing keys over which that voice soars. Or is it her pure, personal lyrics – in turn cynical, angry, hopeful and beautiful?
Natccu’s first album, ‘Sketchbook’, was awash with unpredictable melodies and direct production; these songs have evolved along with her style, as Natccu and her band play eclectic live shows that re-imagine and reconfigure her sound at every turn. Currently working on a new album with famed producer Akira Murata, she has a set of abrasive yet chart-worthy songs to unveil on her debut UK tour.
